South Mountain won the Region II Academic Decathlon for the second year in a row, edging neighborhood rival, Cesar Chavez, February 1-2 at Goldwater High School.  All nine team members captured medals, thanks to a victory in the Super Quiz Relay, and each team member earned a four-year scholarship for an in-state university.  The Jaguars were led by senior Connor Wade, who won 10 medals, including eight golds.  He was the overall 10-event scoring leader in the 27-team event, amassing 8,199.9 points in the Honors Division.  It was his second year as the overall top scorer.  Anto George had the fourth-best overall score with 6,696 points, and went six-for-six answering Super Quiz Relay questions.  Benjamin Webb finished second in overall points among Varsity Division competitors.  Other team members were Rafael Lopez, Honors; Markaya Hill, Eugenia Anane-Wae, and Christopher Daines in Scholastic Division, and Christopher Medina and Heriberto Macias in Varsity.  The Jaguars had the most points of all teams in five individual events--Art, Music, Language & Literature, and Social Science. South’s 37,551.7 points topped second place Chavez, 36,527.3, the second consecutive year the teams finished 1-2.  Chavez won the region in back-to-back years in 2010 and 2011.  Phoenix Union schools have won the Regional 10 of the last 11 years.  South has four of those titles.  Under Coach Todd Decker, the Jaguars will move on to the State Decathlon, March 9-10,  for the 22nd time in 23 years.
